The "official" recipe for a Martini is 2 parts gin to 1 part dry vermouth. The less vermouth you use the drier the Martini (I prefer just a splash of vermouth). Shaking it puts tiny ice crystals in it which waters it down imperceptably (the watering down is what is considered bruised gin) but chills it considerably. Stirring won't bruise the gin but usually doesn't chill it as much. Also, if possible you should take your clean, dry Martini glasses and place them in the freezer at least 1 hour prior to serving the Martini's this will help them stay cold longer. My personal opinion is that the colder the better. Also the garnish should be 2 olives per Martini. If you add a little bit of olive juice to it, it is a Dirty Martini, this is the way I prefer them.

Martini's are a good drink, but be very careful, they are very potent and will knock you for a loop before you know it.

Enjoy!

A real martini (not one of those fruity things they serve now) is gin with a dribble of dry vermouth in it. Use good gin, Tanqueray or Bombay at the very least; Magellan, Millers, and Boodles are very nice.

Olives on a toothpick is the only choice for a garnish. Onions turn it into a Gibson.

Always stir, never shake. Only dorks and James Bond wants bruised gin.

Vodka should be banished to teenage drunkfests forever. There is no such thing as a martini made with vodka.

Well, I disagree w/ thedubmint (gin snob!)... you can make a very good vodka martini. Make sure it's a good quality vodka - I prefer Ketel One, Grey Goose is also good. That in a shaker full of ice w/ a splash of dry vermouth (the less vermouth, the drier the martini). I prefer mine a bit dirty, which means a bit of olive juice in the glass first, then strain the martini into your glass. I love bleu cheese olives for a garnish personally... mmmm, heaven.
