If your yard is fenced, you can stop using the leash now. However, if you are still house training him you need to at least watch while he's outside to make sure he actually goes. It's best to go with him until he fully understands what it is you want him to do out there. Otherwise, he may go outside and play, then come back inside and pee!

First of all, do you have a fenced in area or is it just open for them to run. If it is open then I would NEVER let him off of the leash or chain when by himself. If you do have a fenced in area, then it just depends. Start by putting him out, with you, with OUT the leash and see how he does. After that is working well, try just standing at the door, etc etc.

You can just send him out when you are sure that he won't run off. My dog is 3 and finally can go outside without a leash. You might want to try taking him outside with the leash on and letting go to see what he does that way you can catch him if he tries to run off.

So is that it? Is that the only reason you let your dog out for; to tinkle? I would hope you are teaching your puppy how to walk on a leash, and eventually will be taking the "little guy" for walks. Just opening the back door is NOT the proper way to care for a dog. Please revise your question and add that you DO PLAN ON EXERCISING YOUR DOG!

That all depends upon if your yard is fully fenced in. If it is you can send him out anytime and just keep an eye on him.
