Priests to purify site after Bush visit
Associated Press
Friday, March 9, 2007
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -- Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.
Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites - which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles - would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.
Bush's trip has already has sparked protests elsewhere in Latin America, including protests and clashes with police in Brazil hours before his arrival. In Bogota, Colombia, which Bush will visit on Sunday, 200 masked students battled 300 riot police with rocks and small homemade explosives.
The tour is aimed at challenging a widespread perception that the United States has neglected the region and at combatting the rising influence of Venezuelan leftist President Hugo Chavez, who has called Bush "history's greatest killer" and "the devil."
Iximche, 30 miles west of the capital of Guatemala City, was founded as the capital of the Kaqchiqueles kingdom before the Spanish conquest in 1524.

First off we have nothing to be ashamed of. I went over in 03 with the Marine Corps, witch traditionally are the most under equiped branch of service and I had everything I needed to survive in a combat zone. Second of all yes some of the conditions at our hospitals out patient housing was less than pristine but we made the transition from peace to war very quickly and had to open up quarters that sat dormant for years. Our wounded recive the best medical treatment possible and they are doing there best to rectify the housing situation. The VA hospitals were also understaffed at the begining of the war for the amount of wounded that need treatment after leaving active duty, however they are hiring as many doctors and nurses and support staff as possible, and for dealing with these situations I say we are doing a damned good job

You are all of a sudden ashamed of this administration's failures? What about the cuts to the military and military health care by the Clinton administration. You are just now seeing the results of those cuts because someone in the media figured out that they might cause an embarrassment to this administration.
Let me enlighten you.... I am the daughter of a veteran and a veteran myself. My husband is a veteran and my brothers are both still active duty military, the oldest is in Iraq. We are proud to have served and continue to serve our country despite the limitations placed on us at every opportunity by a bunch of tree hugging leftist liberals. These same idiots are currently looking to cut another 1.9 billion dollars from the current budget that finances retiree/veteran health care in oppossition to the current administrations recommendations.
So please tell me; Who "exactly" should be embarrassed?

Yes, I am ashamed; ashamed that I have Americans like you tying our hands and feet while browbeating us down from the relative safety that we as soldiers provide you. If you truly love your country, then grab an M-16 and man your post, because if we lose in Iraq, the terrorists will hit us with a level of savagery that will make 9/11 pale in comparison.

We should be ashamed that our military leaders are handcuffed in running the war. We should be ashamed that we've allowed the media and politicians who are only concerned with reelection keep us from winning this war. In that manner, we've failed our troops. This is a winnable war, but we must allow our leaders to lead and fight, not be handcuffed by rules of engagement that are set out by people who never have had to fight.

How about less empty words and more action?
If the Democratic majority in Congress allocated some money instead of holding 'hearings' that are designed to produce nothing more than political grandstanding - I would be more impressed.

How are you taking action? Being ashamed does absolutely nothing. Writing this statement on this site does absolutely nothing. How are you taking action and exactly what are you asking others to do?
