If you dont care about the Visata's price then go and buy it, my computer's performance is little less than yours, and Vista works smothly on my machine. But I recommend you that you install Vista as a second operating system.
I have Vista as a second operating system on my computer. I really liked the new graphic shiny stuff, but this reduce the performance of your machine, it really needs a powerful computer!
If you ask me why I wont use Vista as my first operating system I will tell you why:
1-It slows my machine even that I have a powerful one.
2- some softwares didn't work in it like Adobe reader 8, which is a bad sign that other programs might not work either.
3- Vista needs longer time to start and to shut down than XP.
4- I don't need the HIGH level of security that Vista has, may be if am using my computer as a server I would think about it, anyway, any anti virus would do the job.
5- You don't need to install drivers, Vista will do it. But it didn't recognize my new HP printer, which doesn't have a Vista CD to install its driver, so you might need to go check the web for drivers that vista doesn't support.
The things I liked about Vista is the new Aero look and the Chess game :D
In my opinion it doesn't deserve that high price.

Go here: http://www.cnet.com/4520-33_1-6671810-1.html
and click "Can you run it?"
It will collect your computer hardware specs and tell you.
Like someone above me already said, if they gave you the free upgrade then it should be able to run it fine...the question is, do you want it? Most likely the answer to the question is NO...but it's ultimately your decision. You can always get an external harddrive to back up all of your information. Then install Vista and if you don't like it you can reformat it back to Windows XP MCE. Give it a try if you want to. You can always change it back with the System Restore Discs that should have came with your computer originally (if they didn't then you can most likely call your computer manufacturer and have the send you a copy)
To be honest though, in my opinion (and even CNET's...a leader in computing websites), Vista sucks. I would wait like a year and then get a fresh version of Vista because all of the bugs should be worked out by then...or better yet, buy a Mac and then you can have both windows and mac in one amazing computer.
Seriously, Vista is just a really crappy copy of Mac OS X.
Don't take my word for it: http://www.osweekly.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2300&Itemid=449
If you go to CNET.com they tell you exactly why Vista sucks...and exactly why you should not waste your money on it (not that you are spending anything though, right?)! Check here for the top 5 reasons not to buy Vista: http://www.cnettv.com/9710-1_53-26158.html?tag=vid
I completely prefer Windows MCE (what you currently have installed) over Vista ANYDAY!
I know that you didn't ask about Macs, but just in case you are interested read on...if not, then just skip this section. Macs seriously are the future in computing. I just got my first one and I've never been so amazing with a computer in my life. It never has ANY problems whatsoever. Plus if I ever need to use Windows software, I have partitioned my harddrive so that I can run either Mac OS X or Windows. It really is nifty...you should look into it. Windows runs faster on my Mac then it does on any other computer I've ever owned (and I've had several amazing PCs in my day...yet they truly just don't compare with Mac). Here's a short clip on the new iMac Core 2 Duo (which my best friend just got and it ROCKS! I have the MacBook Core 2 Duo...which is also amazing). http://www.cnettv.com/9710-1_53-26158.html?tag=vid
here's info on the macbook: http://www.cnettv.com/9710-1_53-26158.html?tag=vid
Keep in mind, you can still run Windows, even Vista, on these computers!
If you do still decide to use Vista make sure that you do your research before installing. Vista Ultimate is by far the best, but has a hefty price tag at almost $400. You can check out the differences in specifications here: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2068721,00.asp
you can also check here: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3672_7-6687907-1.html?tag=compare
However, if you got Vista Home for free and your computer is up to par...it's ultimately your decision whether to install it or not. Tred lightly. :)
Personally, if I were you I would just keep using Win MCE!

If your computer came with a Vista upgrade, then it will definitely work on your computer....
1 GB of RAM for home premium is not highly recommended, but rather 2 GB to have Vista runs at its best... But you will be just fine with 1 GB...
Computer CPU is also necessary.
With two GB of RAM< your computer will fun as fast as XP, 50 times faster.
You have a great day. Message from Dell Tech.

If your laptop have XP don't upgrade to Vista, it's nothing more than XP, just the look, and so many problems will occur if you do.

No! Maybe it will be as good down the line when they get the bugs out, but right now Vista is not compatible with most programs and conflicts with a lot of the hardware.

I recommend you to not upgrade your pc to vista. Wait at least one year until this OS is debugged and then buy debugged version
