I just recently got my kitty neutered and now suddenly he wants to be outdoors! he runs everytime I open the door! It's upseting my four year old b/c we have come to love kitty and can't imagine life w/out him (like if he runs outside and wanders away or gets hit by a car). I can't understand it. Before we got him neutered he wouldn't dare do more than stick his head out and run back inside. Now it's as though he lives for that oppurtunity to run at the sight of an open door. I thought getting fixed would fix this problem?? Any ideas of how to keep him inside? Would a child's gate at the door help? Do they have shock collars for kittys? Anything I can spray at the doors to keep him away?? Any help is welcomed. Thanks.

you just have to keep the door closed, cats naturally want to go out side. You can discipline him with a spray bottle; every time he runs for the door spray him.

I don't think you should do the shock collar thing, it doesn't sound very humane to me.

if yours is still a kitten then do what i did . teach the kitten to come for walks with you . you dont need a leash or anything . you just have to walk along and stop and listen when she meows because she is scarred of a leaf or some silly thing . then go back and pick her up and carry her for a bit . once she is big she will know where to go and not go find her way home and all . they are good at watching for cars if you teach them to stop and look . my cat now comes for walks with me and my dog across 4 lane streets and miles along the water front . she has a great time. having the dog is good too i can tell him to go find kitty and he will and then she will follow along with him if she is scared . she will cross streams everthing . now one day at first she climbed a huge oak tree right to the top i mean the very smallest branch at the very top and she cried for hours. the fire dept does not really come and rescue cats so i had to wait until she climbed done about 5 hours later. i only helped her with the last bit as she jumped into my arms.
yip that is the thing to do . a cat that stays inside all the time is sad. very sad. my cat brings me bats and mice and birds to the door and has a great time every night she roams around . she had one small cat fight but after that i have seen her with her cat friends at night and they all sneak around together. even if my kitty who is now about 8 years old was to be hit by a car i would not be sorry because she has had such a great life. this is the only way for a cat to have a great life.
so you take the child the kitten and you outside and play around in the back yard she will learn not to go too far. and she will have a wonderfull life.

He's probably running to the door because he's curious. Just be extra careful when opening the door, eventually, he'll realize that life is really good inside the house and he won't attempt to go outside. Saying a stern "NO" while pushing him away or clapping your hands loudly will give him an extra hint.

I've owned cats all my life and none of them have attempted to escape except for one that was an outside cat before I adopted him and brought him inside. He got out once, I found him and brought him back in....he never attempted it again. He lived to be 15 years old.

You could try double sided tape on the floor just in front of the door. Most kittens hate the feel of that and won't go near it.

i agree with the water-gun-in-hand answer......or you could just try and keep an eye on the cat while outside. My cat goes outside all the time, it is very smart, it usually stays around the house because of our neighbors dogs though. It also know where to come back and get fed.
