All of the ones I have met are VERY sweet and loyal. They showed no aggression towards humans unless someone was being aggressive toward their owners (i.e. yelling at them). I have met five or six and at least three were dog aggressive but they did not grow up with other dogs. The others were very good with other dogs, even playing at the dog park, but they were raised with another dog and at least one had a cat at home. It seems to me that there would be a need to do extensive animal socialization for one from puppyhood. ALL of them were excellent with children even if they did not have kids at home. Like most large breeds, hip dysplasia is the most commonly reported defect. If you rescue one, you'll just have to take your chances. If you purchase one from a breeder, make sure the dogs hav passing OFA hips AND elbows. Ask for a copy of the OFA certificate or look the dogs up online as some people have started misleading people (telling buyers that the dogs are OFAed but neglecting to menton that OFA said the dog is dysplastic). I don't know what country you are in but here is the breed club for the US. They can answer all of your questions. If you're in a different country, they can give you the contact information for the breed club in your country.
Oh, OBEDIENCE CLASSES!!! These are VERY strong dogs and teaching proper manners and obedience as a puppy will make things SOOO much easier for you when that pup is a big, strong dog. It's also a great way to socialize a pup in a controlled environment.

Iam a veterinary nurse and can honestly say that all the Dogue de Bordeaux I have ever come into contact with have been really nice (a bit brainless). If you got one from a reputable breeder and socialised it well and trained it properly then I'd say that it would be a fab dog to have. They are unfortunately known to be dominant over other dogs and are very strong and powerful. A pup would probably get used a lab very quickly

Also known as the French Mastiff, they are very loyal, protective dogs. I own a English Mastiff and I would not buy another dog. He's loving, loyal and is a great watch dog. I have a 2 mo. old baby and he is very affectionate towards him and stands attentively when he cries. He sleeps next to his crib and is very protective. All mastiffs are great family dogs and need lots of room to run and exercise. They're really sensitive, so you must be careful with how you discipline them. When they get older, they can be very hard headed and defiant. All in all, they are great dogs for the family.

They are a very beautiful breed, definitely not for a first time owner,a dog that responds well to kindness, training and attention, they also need trasining properly, not just basic sit, etc;you have to be firm with them, not in a heavy handed way, they also need to be very well socialised from a young age,so as not to have temperament problems when they are full grown
