they are dropped into boiling water alive. this would never be allowed to happen to any other animal, surely they feel pain as well as any other creature, i have seen lobsters cooked and they don't die instantly like many people believe.

The cruelty starts before then. Lobsters are usually shipped and sold with their claws banded to prevent them from injuring each other or the purchaser. They cannot open and close the claws when they are banded, which causes the claws to begin to atrophy inside the shell.

Then there is the frog story: if you put a frog in a kettle that is filled with water that is cool and pleasant,
and then you gradually heat the kettle until it starts boiling,
the frog will not become aware of the threat until it is too late.
The frog's survival instincts are geared towards detecting sudden changes.

Im sure lobsters dont die instantly all the time. I am a huge animal lover but not so much for lobsters. How else would you kill them without boiling them first? they have a hard shell. You going to stomp on there shell? that would be more painful. You say other animals arent killed by boiling water, well yeah they just get there head chopped off, tell me thats not painful. They get shot, thats painful, theres no easy way out. If you dont want this happening to these lobsters buy as many as you can so you can "save" them. All animals that die for eating purposes dont die easy. Maybe you should think of that before running your mouth. A rabbit, a cow, a lamb, etc are alot more better and cuter animals than a lobster.

I've read the previous answers with interest. I'm told that the usual & humane way now is to freeze them first; they feel nothing, being cold water creatures anyway, and are then boiled from frozen.

Sounds good to me, if you happen to be a lobster that gets caught.

Just for the record L O, it was worse than you said. Dropping into boiling water would have been quick. In fact, crabs & lobsters were boiled from cold in sheds on the beach. One of the fishermen sat by to push them back into the boilers as they tried to climb out (we you would, wouldn't you?)

What do you reckon?

lobsters and other shellfish secrete toxins if they are dead prior to cooking. this is why one should also not eat any cooked clams or oysters whose shell does not open in the cooking process. though death is not instantaneous, it is rapid. an, unlike popular belief, lobsters do not have vocal cords and cannot therefore "scream" - the sounds that can be heard while they are boiling are akin to the sound a tea kettle makes when the water is boiling. they are caused by the air/steam escaping from the shells of the lobsters.

however, if you feel this strongly about the way lobsters are prepared, then by all means, don't eat them. it is a very personal choice.

Lobsters don't have a voice box what you are actually hearing is the trapped air escaping when you put them into boiling water, this is actually a humane way of cooking them

LOL.....yeah...I hate to do that too. I do gourmet cooking as a serious hobby. I tried to make this less painful for the thing and one article said take the tip of a large knife, place it on the top of the head and cleve the head in two. That is supposed to be quick and painless.
Well...they lied. Taht damn thing almost flew off the counter. One of the rubber bands broke on the claws and in grabbing it before it fell from the counter the SOB caught my finger and squeezed. Now that hurt!
I'm afraid the pot of boiling water is the best method. I'm not into rubbing their undersides until they fall asleep or some nonsense like that.

just think of the poor crabs, they are placed in cold water, which is gradually brought to the boil, it lulls them to sleep, until they wake up half cooked. I worked in a kitchen where we had to put stones on the lids to stop them lashing out.

At least the lobsters die quick

It doesnt matter what the animal or creature is it shouldnt have to painful be put to death! Apparently they scream when they are put in boiling water-not nice! I think they can stab them and then cut them down the middle to kill them and they die straight away! but maybe if they are boiled first they are easier to cut through! I hatre the thought of it!

in the case of the lobster, if it dies before being cooked, it releases toxins, that's why most of the fishmongers sells it already boiled.
