Hello, I quit smoking 2 days ago, but only because I was so sick and congested i could barley breath, but i decided to quit at that moment, now im just worried that when i get over this cold/flu whatever it is, that i dont start smoking again. I think im over the worst part, cause i was hacking up a whole bunch of gross black, brown mucus, and the body pains are going away, (tight lungs, chest), and the worst mood swings are over, lol. How do i keep away from the cigs for good?

The best advice I heard was to figure out why you started smoking in the first place. If you smoke because you're bored keep a book or some other form of entertainment next to you so you don't get bored. If you smoke to stop yourself from eatting, chew gum. If you smoke to prevent you from losing your temper unleash your anger on a punching bag etc. Hope this helps.
Good Luck!

They have so many things now to help people quit smoking like patches and gum and therapy sessions.... some work, some don't. What did work (not for all, but for some) when I was in graduate school (2004)... we had a pig that for research purposes had inhaled 2nd hand smoke for a few years. When I was teaching some college juniors about the respiratory system, we were given normal pig lungs to inflate with a pump as well as the smoker lungs. Now I agree that though the students said "I'm never going to smoke again," this was probably untrue...Lord knows addiction is hard to break...but the black, tumor covered inflated lungs of the smoking pig at least turned 1 person i later became friends with into a non-smoker. If you lived closer to where I went grad school, and will be going to dental school, I'd show you too. :P

First of all, Congratulations!
I quit smoking 11 days ago.I am doing it cold turkey and it is hard. You obviously have a solid reason for quitting because of your sickness you just went through and the mucus you were coughing up was from the cigarettes.
This is what I have been doing to keep me from smoking..... when I really want a smoke I look at a list of reasons that I made why I quit. Sometimes I have to read that list 10 times before it sinks in!!! My reasons are my health, the cost, my kids and husband, the smell, etc. Lots of reasons.
I chew spicy gum like cinammon flavor and suck on hard candies like fireball jawbreakers. I use a straw to inhale on if I get a bad craving.
Drink alot of water. I also read that when you quit smoking your blood sugar levels drop so drink some fruit juice which will help you from feeling sluggish and will help avoid headaches.
The most compelling reason would be that YOU want to quit and no matter what situation you are in, you will not give in.
I would try to avoid any aides like the patch and nictotine gum, etc. because you will get addicted to the nicotine and will go through withdrawals once you are done using them.
As I have stated this is my 11th day and I woke up this morning not thinking about smoking! yay!!
You can do this if you really want to.
Good luck!

I cannot suggest Wellbutrin enough. It's what I used after over 25 years of smoking. It helped me more than I could ever have hoped it would.
I also took a good hard look at WHY I was smoking and what my motivation was for continuing to poison myself and waste money on a useless addiction. Once I took a look at that stuff HONESTLY and not "as a smoker", I found that there realy WAS no reason to keep smoking. All I had to do was get over the physical addiction (the meds helped) and I have been home free since Nov 1st 2006.

Good luck. It's not easy, but I can tell you from my own persoanl experiance that it is VERY worth it. Food tastes better. You can smell again. You can walk up stairs without getting out of breath. You smell better. and I have even set up a "smoking jar" in which I put $5 a day for the pack of smokes I WOULD have smoked that day. So far I have enough to buy a Nintendo Wii and have taken me and my spouse out to dinner twice. Not too shabby for money I was throwing away on trying to slowly kill myself. =)

I was a two pack/day (players filter kings). I'm smoke free17yrs. on May 2. The 3rd day to the 7th day was the hardest ( physical withdrawl). After 3 weeks the habit cravings lessened. ( I was less snarly too). The smell no longer made me salivate in month 4. After 3+ years smokers no longer irritated me.
The day I stopped I divided a page. one side+ reasons to smoke. One side reasons to quit.
Find an oral substitute (not a nicotine substitute as we fight an addiction as well as a habit) I used plastic stir sticks. When I craved i would do my pre lighting ritual tap 3 times on the pack, flip it through my fingers ect.(we all have them) I would keep the straw in my cig hand till the crave returned then put it in my mouth. I found quiting easy it was not starting up again that was hard, I quit a hundred times. I stopped smoking once. GOOD LUCK!!!

Sorry you're sick.
We each have our ways...
I have quit, except socially.
And it is all b/c I smelled my own hair while substitute teaching one day.
I was turned off so much by my own odor, that I just can't do it.
Now, outside, with acquaintances, once a week?
Sure. I buy the ones that I know I can pass off to people, and I smoke three to seven, and I'm done for the week.
Or two weeks.
And if I never went back to the hang-out, I'd be done.
B/c there's no way I ever want to SMELL myself like that again, in front of school kids or any co-workers whose respect I want!

2days!!! Remember. It is very difficult to quit smoking. Only Your will power can help you. Gradually decrease "1" every month and finally you will find, you never need "1". Apart from it, try using something else in place of cigarettes such as "cardamom". It really helps.

The million dollar question.
Throw out ALL cigarettes, lighters, and ashtrays. I have quit unsuccessfully about 5 times in the last 10 years and if you got those reminders there then it doesn't do any good. The closest I came was using the Patch. After you get better you may want to try those, they cost less then cigs anyways. Keep yourself busy, keep your hands busy. Good luck.

Use the gum and patches to see if they help. Keep reminding yourself how bad you felt when you were smoking. If you get cravings try and put them off by snacking on something healthy so it doesnt harm your health such as carrot sticks or something like that.
