running on a track seems much harder for me, is it really more of a workout to run on a track/outside as opposed to running on a treadmill

Running on a treadmill is running under controlled conditions, like temperature, incline, speed, etc. Running on a track better prepares your body for unexpected conditions, like temperature, changes in elevation, softer ground, suddenly getting attacked by a cheetah, etc.
I think it is better to run outside; you'll be better equipped to run if you need to in real life.

I always wondered the same thing myself. I honestly think that running on a track actually helps you in your work out since its not running in place. Try running a couple of times on the track after a while youll see that you will be used to it. You can always use the treadmill when the weather is really bad. Either way working out is the way to go.

i completely agree with you...a treadmill works up a sweat and is good but it's much more of a workout when you hit the real track.
