In Michigan, they'll put out a bench warrant on him/her. "IF" they happen to stumble across him/her doing something else (like a traffic violation) they can arrest them on the bench warrant. But they won't go looking for him/her. They don't want deadbeats in jail - takes up too much money so they often will try to find a solution, get them to pay something & come up with a plan to pay off the arrearage. If they do end up in jail, each subsequent time they get arrested, their time in jail goes up. 30 days the first time, 60 days the second, etc.
There are lots of reason someone gets behind in their payments, loss of a job, general financial difficulties, etc. $600 is nothing - my ex owes over $70,000. Last year he 'contributed' $100 total. Now THAT'S a deadbeat. He'll get picked up sooner or later - he's up to 90 days in the clink now.

It does depend on the state in which you live in. My friend's brother was a deadbeat dad here in CT for $1,200 but that's because that was when his ex-wife finally approached the state about him not paying so it could be lower. When you get $100 a month, that's over a year of no support! You need to find out what department of your state handles these situations and call and ask some questions.

Like was already said, it depends on the judge and the custodial parent. Some custodial parents decide that it is not worth the hassle of pursuing a court case against the non-paying party. Legally a judge can throw you in jail for not paying... it doesn't matter how much you owe. Usually they will give a couple of chances to come up with the money owed first.

I live in New York State and you will get arrested if you owe that much. My sister-in-laws now husband got arrested before they were married for non-payment of child support. He was living with both her and their child and supporting them but there was no actual record of him giving her money for the baby. So he got arrested, my sister-in-law had to bail him out, and he got his wages garnished even though my sister-in-law explained the situation to the courts.

no, if the whole world owed 600 dollars or more, we all would be in jail. People owe 10,000 in child support and they are free.

Gosh Ruthie, my ex owes over $33,000 in back child support and he freely roams and has not lost his drivers license privilege, hunting license. Also, he has failed to file his taxes for 2005. So....the answer to your and your friends debate is No.......these dead beat parents suffer no consequences.

Perhaps a night or weekend in jail, but not a long-term sentence. You have to consider what it costs the taxpayers to keep a person in jail, that space is needed for more dangerous criminals.

I think it depends upon the state in which you live. My ex owes much more and he is free as a bird.
