b. the Third Estate.

The First Estate were the clergymen, They collected taxes.

The Second Estate was the nobility. They were mostly interested in their privileges and spent time trying to gain influence near the monarch. They spent a lot of time enjoying themselves.

The Third Estate were the commoners, the middle-class and lower-class of French society. They were working hard and had to pay a lot of taxes to the state and the clergy.

In what century are we talking about?
Taxes were the main source of the economy, if that's what it were called. Kings, nobles and the Church amassed the money by taxing on agriculture and right of ways to the cities and gifts to the Church. Commerce was also taxed heavily. Taverns and eateries racked money from travelling peasants and merchants, and versed enormous amounts of taxes.

So its the third estate.

a-Most of the work and the taxation fell on the first estate, or the common people. I am assuming you are talking about french Revolution times, but I think it is probably still true.
