I heard of such a case where an atheist raises a child in a rural area completely seperated from religious influences and the child thought up the idea of a creato, thus converting the atheist. Until I find the source of this, it's just an urban legend.

I'm betting urban legend but I'd like to know the truth. It wouldn't surprise me. Atheists believe that belief in God is a natural error - a product of our capacity for identifying cause and effect and abstract patterns and then extending them beyond what is provable.

A child brings up creation and thus converts his atheist parents .... hmmmm. They'd not heard of it before?

Of course, if what you really mean is 2 morons who lived in the woods and never gave a thought to these things, that would be another story.

Sounds like an urban legend. Smarty Pants is right.

In response to the comment below that if primitive men could think up the idea of god it only stands to reason that an individual can think up the idea of god, I have this to say: A single primitive man did not think up god overnight. The concept of god was itself evolutionary and took hundreds if not thousands of years.

Never heard of what you are talking about with that child. It can happen though, as children do look for answers they cannot find, as they cannot receive or comprehend a lot of the scientific information out there today.

Feral children have no concept of god. Check the case studies... children raised without human contact do not have any concept of a god. God is a learned influence.

by the by... why wouldn't a god show himself to a feral child? Why wouldn't jesus?

Urban legend. The chances of a child being so removed from society that he/she doesn't get introduced to the concepts of religion and god(s) is almost impossible. So, to think they came up with the concept on their own really isn't feasible.

Of course!

A God, particularly one like that of Abraham, is a singularly childish construct. It is a being that praises someone for doing nothing worthwhile, hates whomever they dislike, and agrees to look like them. What's not to like for any kid to make something like that up?

I'm sure it's happened. Children think up all kind of things. And to wonder where we come from is normal.

I doubt they come up with a god that smites people to hell though. They probably come up with a very loving god.

Well i think we all no matter what religion, hope for something more that what we have, we all talk to our higher selves, god, whatever, i think it's very possible, after all, we didn't just get here by chance did we? there has to be someone that started it all off....doesn't there?
