St Johns Wort is Great if Taken regularly, or on an AS NEEDED basis. I found that it works well either way, but this could vary from person to person.
Basically be prepared to check out what works best for you. You may even have to take a higher dosage on certain days. I think it may also be worthwhile to see if you can get something to help with Seratonin levels. Since, if your down time coincides with a drop in Seratonin, then this may be the Issue other than a St Johns Wort help .... which I think helps a great deal.

CAUTION!

I tried 5HTP, it works for some but you should only take the minimum dose or half the minimum dose, with me i tried 1 x 50mg a day and after 2 weeks i had bad tremors, then i tried half a capsule a day, after 4 weeks it was causing very very bad anxiety and nightmares, i now stopped 2 weeks ago and feel better. Some people are sensitive to these things, check out this expert doc he knows everything and there are messages from past users of 5 HTP, as for St Johns wort i tried it some years ago and it did nothing. There is another called SAM e, it supposed to be the natural replacement for Prozac and has good results but the same applies it can cause anxiety in large doses, (check the docs website)

Used St John's Wort for 7 years. Had to stop because my eyes and skin became very sensitive to sunlight. Used it on a daily basis. It took about 3 weeks to kick in so I don't think occasional use would be effective. I suffer from osteo arthritis in my back, elbows and hips. I found it was excellent for medium level depression and stopped me being such a grumpy old man. Trying to cope unsupported by drugs now. Hard going.

I can't answer this, I just want to make sure you know that if you're on birth control pills, St. John's Wort can diminsh the effectiveness of your pill!

But with most mental health boosters and medicines, I would assume that you would have to take it regularly to get an effect from it.

With St. John's Wort, you need to take it regularly and for a long period of time before you can start feeling the effects of it. You can't just pop one pill and feel better instantly. I think they say you need two months before you can feel the effects of it.

Personally, I tried it, and it didn't seem to do anything for me.

never tried it, but I know it's very good for depression. When taking it for depression, use regularly, if it's for you period I tried Vitamin B6, I took this a week before my period started, it worked like magic, maybe it's the same with St John's Wort.

you have to take it regularly and multiple times a day for it to have a noticable effect. If you have a serious problem go to a doctor or a psychiatrist. If not, just stay away from drugs in general. "natural" drugs effect the physiology of the body just like perscription drugs but with out the guidlines.

I found it to be very helpful but you must take it regularly in order for your body to use it effectively. It has to build up in your system to be utilized by the body. Good luck with it.
