I have OCD and constantly am worrying about germs. I am on meds and just recently got on another my dr says this germ issue is causing extreme anxiety. It is ruining my life. The other day I was around someone whose husband has a fever and stuff and I literally came in and took a shower and was having a anxiety attack because of it. I opened the door just a crack to talk to her so my dog would not get out and I still felt like I was contaminated. Does anyone out there have this extreme fear? I hope my new med works becuase this just stinks.

i don't have ocd but i do have some other fun and interesting stuff...i definitely have the germ paranoia and my therapist suggest a book called "stop obsessing" to help...you can find it on amazon...he also suggested (though i think this is stupid) that i keep a rubber band on my wrist and snap it when i have obsessive thoughts...and he made me train myself to acknowledge my feelings but translate them into facts (as in..."i feel like i'm going to be sick now because i sat next to someone who was blowing their nose...but i know that since i washed my hands thoroughly and turned away from the person that i probably won't get sick")

good luck

You asked and so I'll answer.

First, I'd like to suggest that you open your mind to try hypnotherapy to get to the root cause of your problems.

Secondly, you need to become a positive force in your own healthcare, meaning that YOU need to stop any and all negative thoughts from finding a home in your mind; they must be STOPPED at the entryway to your mind and not allowed in at all.

When you first try stopping these thoughts, it may take a lot of practice until your subconscious fully gets the idea that you want it all stopped for real.

YOU must take control of the information you allow entry to your inner mind, become pro-active and become the GUARDIAN at the gate.

After you practice each time, saying aloud or silently "CANCEL, CANCEL" the time between the initial thought and the cancelation of it will decrease--meaning that you're succeeding in keeping negatives out. Once you've mastered this, you've given yourself a means to stop the worry. You may have to do this a million (exaggeration) times a day, but DO IT!

You will have learned how to recognize what's harmful to your mind and what's not and that's basically a step in the right direction in your case.

Becoming pro-active in your own health care, accepting or not accepting thoughts, ideas, concepts, words...you will have mastered the hardest part.

The only other thing you might want to re-think from your new position of self-mastery, is what kinds of side effects your prescribed meds may be having on you. From all indications that I've seen for advertised medications, the side effects are often as damaging as the dis-ease itself.

Dis-ease...Hypnotheraphy can help you find out what's making you not-at-ease with yourself. A reputable Professional will work with you if you let him/her.

I hope this helps.

Your symtoms are classic OCD, so I should wait and see if the new drug helps. Have you had any therapy. It would help you. Ask your doctor about it.

It is not the worrying that is ruining your life,it is what is causing you to worry that is "ruining your life.".
Once you eliminate the cause for your worry, your life will not be ruined.
