太陽 = "taiyou"
is correct, although you'll find it isn't used as much as you'd think. It's used in technical/scientific situations, or when you want to refer to the star at the center of our solar system, rather than the light in the sky.

日 = "hi" is actually more common, is used to refer to light in the sky rather than the star and is used both as word as itself and in compounds, sometimes pronounced "nichi" or "jitsu" (although "jitsu" usually refers to a "day").

Examples of usage:

solar system: 太陽系 "taiyou-kei"

sunlight: 日差し = "hizashi" or 日の光 "hi no hikari"

suntan: 日焼け = "hiyake"
日に焼けた = "hi ni yaketa" ("I got tanned")

sunrise: 日の出 = "hi no de"

sunset: 日の入り = "hi no iri" or 日没 = "nichibotsu"

morning sun: 朝日 or 旭 = "asahi" (as in the name of the beer!)

a sunny spot: 日溜まり = "hidamari"

etc etc.

Example sentences:
If you want to say for example "the sun's hidden amongst the clouds", you'd say:
日が雲の中に隠れていきます。
*hi* ga kumo no naka ni kakurete imasu.

If you want to say "the sun has a diameter of ?? km" you'd say:
太陽の直径は??キロメートルです。
*taiyou* no chokkei wa ?? kirome-toru.

To sum up, you'll find most times when you want to talk about the sun in a conversational situation you'll use "hi" or a compound like the ones above, whereas in a scientific discussion you'll use "taiyou".

Barkley is correct- It's 'taiyou' (太陽)
It's pronounced (necktie - neck) + (yogurt - gurt)

'ni' or 'nichi' or 'hi' (日) also mean sun, but they're only used in compound words. They're never used alone.
