My 15 month old chihuahua has had an on again/off again problem with the skin getting very dry on his ears. He will be fine for a month and then suddenly one day his ears with be dry and red from his scratching. I had him checked for ear mites, which I thought was the problem at first...no mites. The problem will come on for 2 or 3 days and then seem to suddenly be fine...Could it be the air in the home? Is there something I can put on his ears when they are dry that will help ease any burning? The vet we saw suggested putting a little baby oil on the ears but this seemed to irritate him even more. Any suggestions, please?

You could try some petroleum jelly. However, what really needs to be done is to find out the cause of the dryness and itching. Diet is usually the first thing that needs to be checked. Make sure that you are using only a brand that does not contain any artificial additives and colourings. Also do not feed out of plastic bowls as these are known for causing skin problems. Good Luck.

Yes it very well could be the air is so very dry. Put some baby oil for sensitive skin or maybe even a baby lotion that is fragrance free on the tiny ears a few times a day and see if that helps.

I was thinking exackly what your vet said--Baby oil. Maybe the baby oil was too strong for the ears. Their are other oils out there. Try tea oil. Its good for the skin and its not strong, it can be used for dry skin and is very delicate. The air could be causing this. Maybe you should think about getting a humidifier? It will clean the air out and your dog may be more comfortable.

that is the way my dog is. The cause may be how dry it is outside (depends on where you live) or it could be the shampoo that you used to wash him. You should put baby oil or something like that to put on his ears. If it doesnt heal up then i would consider taking it to a vet.

I am almost going to tell you the same thing but olive oil. I would get a wad of cotton dabbed in a little olive oil and rubbing it on his ears - not too much - just a little. If it still doesnt work, call your vet and tell him prescribe some anti itching cream.Good luck. bettyk.

Maybe putting some triple antibiotic ointment such as neosporin on them may help.
