German:
The surname RANGEL is the German word "Ragin-Walt" a Mighty Ruler. I believe this name is an Asturian origin. I also found another same name but the letter W in front of the name RANGEL -WRANGEL- other German name. I also trace in Cyndi's List RANGEL found in Russia and in Poland. It is interesting that I found RANGEL in the old english name Hringan meaning a bell ringer. Since most of the english words comes from the German. I

The family search site by LDS has this name being more worldly, including many hispanic countries, philipines, Denmark, Germany, England, etc, you can look ,see the web site.
The oldest dates do appear to be in Germany, here is a sample:
82. JOHANNES RANGEL - International Genealogical Index / GE
Gender: Male Christening: 04 FEB 1540 Gruenhain, Zwickau, Sachsen
There is also a GENFORUM on this surname, so you could ask some Rangel researchers the same question.
While there are not any DNA projects for Rangel, Family Tree DNA has names that are associated with Rangel having projects with participants (maybe have Rangel in their family trees that they upload). I never saw them list that before, found it worth looking at.

i always had a question about our heritage and our surname origin and i finally found it and i realize that many people don't know of this because they have never cared about it or had found good information, this is normal because the surname Rangel was found during the year 1100 After Christ in Germany and the word Rangel means in old german "Ragin-Walt" (almighty ruler) although it has been noted in France during that period then it moved to spain during middle age because of the economy and war and other interests they become very powerful, When Germans pronounce the "R" the first letter is almost growled when they pronounce the last name. this is normal because most of old german names are suppose to be strong names with meanings of qualities like but most of all people thinks that Rangel is spanish or portuguese mostly americans but it is not it was made in germany and it moved to spain during the middle age and during carlos III and after that but the origin where it really comes from is in germany even spanish people divided the crests from arabic mixed with spaniars or full spaniars they use to put a really distinctive characteristics on those who were not spaniars or latin origin one more way to identified your last name is if the words has an authentinc meaning in spanish and portuguesses usually has an arabic or latin meaning, Rangel has no meaning on those lenguages, it moved during the big migrations when germanic people were taking other territories named thet were francos visigodos y ostrogodos they help the roman empire against the hunos in the V century the roman empire promised to the kings of those germanic towns lands in italy but they did not fulfill their promise to them so they took the lands anyways much of the old germanic people migrated for that reason to spain or other parts of the uk for benefits or maybe to escape of war after that age most of the Rangel moved to north america including mexico and some that were in portugal moved to south america and changed the name spelling to Rengel so the answer it's clear Rangel is an old German surname made after the germanic iron age '' when the vikings age finished
