My fiancé and I are taking a very long trip through central and south america and would love to see the galapagos. We know that you have to fly to the island and pay $100 to get into the reserve, but is there a cheap tour/hotel to do once we get there or can we stay at a hotel and walk around without tours?

Go to Guayaquil or Quito and go to the military air bases (next to the commercial airport). Speak to someone who can take you on an air force flight on a Hercules - they depart regularly. Bribery is rife so expect to pay around $300 (varies to individual). But you are guaranteed a super cheap flight. Good luck1
