I believe that we do idolise things whether we know it or not.
In both cases mankind is equipped with an awareness of, and a capacity to worship God.
Where God has been ignored a void has been left in the mind and something is needed to take it`s place. Basically a material idol has taken the place of God in violation of the first commandment--Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Exodus ch20 v3.
Certainly since Gods existence has been questioned, folks have given him up in the hope of finding fulfilment in the "worship" of things or people to fill that gap.
Your list contains the most popular side tracks but is by no means exhaustive. We could add anything which takes up a huge amount of our time eg Computers, TV, Music, Sports, Careers, Hobbies and so on.

Yup indeedy. Just to be radical, I propose that there are a great many people in the world today that, completely without even realising that what they're doing is idolatry, idolise their own personal representation of God as told to them through religious scripture above and beyond whatever actual God truly exists.

Hello, The Bible says people suffer for a lack of knowledge. And yes there is idolotry all around us & people don't even know what they are doing. Anything that takes the place of God in our life is a false god that cannot love us like God can. We have a place in our heart that only God can fill - but we - in our worldly wisdom choose things like money, drugs, material things, relationships or whatever & it will all let us down...I've been there done that...so I know.....bye bye

yup, we live in a capitalistic society where idolizing these things increases the market and the consumerism levels...it's plain psychology, people should realize it but many fall victim

well it depends on how you think about it. for example money. If your entire life revolves around money and you will miss things like church just to make more money then yes. but if you just see money as something important but you wouldn't miss important things like church to make more then you fine
