I will be getting her right at 8 weeks and intend on starting right away. She is a Brittany Spaniel. Also, if you have any other advice on raising a Brittany as a upland bird dog, it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Each dog is different. If she is used to being near or in a crate from her breeder then she will settle much more quickly than one that has never used it. Crates should only be used for containment if the pup is in danger of hurting itself. Just leave the crate open in the room with a bed in it and let her chose it for herself. With regards to trianing your pup you need to seek specialist gundog training so you get the type of training you need for your circumstances.

I got my dog when he was 13 weeks old & we started right away! Now he is 5 1/2 months old & fully potty trained. He has an accident every now & then but what puppy doesn't! He knows where to go & where not go he sometimes just drinks too much & cant get outside in time...I think it will probably take a full year though for them to get really good at holding it! I hope this helps! Good Luck :)

Crate training is a good thing if done right. First of all the "crate" isn't really a crate its a cage. The metal ones are great because they are easy to clean, easy to transport and have a removable bottom that can be easily cleaned. Have the crate ready for her when she comes. Put a blanket or soft rug, towel or whatever is to be hers in it. Don't get the idea that this replaces house breaking. It doesn't. Give her a treat and use the word you will be using to get her to go to it. Cage, kennel, crate whatever. Should be located in a quiet out of the way spot. Can put a toy or a safe chewy in it for something to do. When I "caged" my dogs it was because we were going to be gone, with no one home. They couldn't be left out because they tore up the house. They would go into it willingly to get their treat. I covered up their cage with a darker colored sheet to keep them quiet. Before they go into the crate they need to go outside, and don't put them in if they are hungry. As soon as someone gets home the pup should go right outside. They usually learn fast just to go to sleep until their people come home. Don't expect a young dog to be able to spend the entire day in a crate. It just isn't possible. She will need some time to get accustomed to her new surroundings so I agree the crate should be left open for a short period of time. Maybe she could take her naps in it. It should be a peaceful thing for her not a fight or battle of wills. Good luck to you and your new pup.

You should have a thorough discussion with the breeder about this. Every breed is different.

I don't care for crate training.

Remember, your puppy has a bladder about half the size of your little finger and needs to urinate every hour or so, right after waking up and right after eating.

First, you have to be able to clean up crap and piss. Then you should be fine!
