I'm trying to understand the two concepts, but not having any luck. Can anyone explain the difference using a simple example?

Karma is a Soul's fate earned by its previous deeds.
Dharma is an enlightened/pure lifestyle.
Conventionally, the two can have quite opposite connotations. Karma is usually associated with negative experiences (what goes round comes round), whereas dharma implies good deeds and pure thoughts.

Dharma is the order of nature - the truth in a way. So Buddha taught the Dharma - the way things are. There is also personal dharma - vocation...what you are here to do in life. Dharma is just an indian term meaning natural order. It can apply to teachings, way of life, job, higher truths, etc.
Karma is the results of your actions. What goes around comes around. What you sow, so shall you reap. Basically, the idea of return...like brings like.

heh. the nasty person hiding inside me wants to say "New agers haven't taken over the concept of dharma yet!"
Dharma is right-living. Damn, that's the Hellenic Polytheist in me talking. Dharma is living in a manner that is within the strictures of one's religion (not doing things against your religion, praying the way you are supposed to, etc.)
