He needs to have his anal sacs emptied. Your vet's tech or a groomer will do this for you..usually about $10.
Here is a cute animated site, to show you how to do it at home> http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_anal_sacs.html
It is FAR more likely to be anal sac full than worms or any other problem.

While checking into this question, I have found the typical responses; no toilet paper, no thumbs, scratch-n-sniff, etc.
However, the most likely reason is because of *anal sacs* that are clogged. Typically, disgustingly smelly fluid is released each time they crap. It is nature's way of letting animals mark their territory. If these sacs become clogged, then they become itchy, and thus very irritating. Which is why they drag their a-ss across the floor. This behavior can also be linked with aggressive licking of their butt. I have seen dogs chomp down too. Looks painful when they do that... This issue can effect both dogs and cats, but most commonly it is seen from dogs.
A quick trip to the Veterinarian can solve your pet's problem. The Vet could show you how to *pop* the sacs yourself so that you would not have to bring in your pet each time. However, the smell is very, very disgusting. You may just want to pay to have them do it for you.
A second possibility (but not nearly as likely), is that your dog might have tape worms. Take a stool sample to your Vet and they can tell whether or not your dog has worms.
On a side note, you may want to shampoo your carpet now... ;-)

This happens to my dog. Dogs have anal glands which hold secretions. When they "go" these glands are supposed to empty out with the bowel movement. Sometimes they don't. Some dogs are more prone to this than others. It's not a big deal if you keep an eye on it.
I have my vet empty the anal glands once or twice a year. Basically they put their finger (rubber gloves, of course) in the dog's butt and clean it out manually. It's kinda gross...and smelly. It doesn''t hurt the dog, just a little uncomfortable.
Try making an appointment for your dog, or have it taken care of on your next visit. Some vets will charge you for the procedure ($25 or so) some will just go ahead and do it.
Good luck!!

Many dogs do that. There might be several reasons. Sometimes they have parasites or worms. Some antiparasitics are good for one kind of parasites but not for others less common. The vet can do a bloodtest to find out.
It's also important to have its anal sacs emptied, a vet can do that or at a grooming place.
If it has long fur around it's butt it may help if you shorten it a bit. My dog used to be uncomfortable after evacuating and when I cut the hair around his butt he never did it again.

The anal sacs should be emptied at least twice a year. This is most likely why your dog is rubbing his butt on the floor. It is inexpensive at your local groomer. It is usually not dangerous but if it gets bad an abscess can occur. Good luck to you and your dog.

His butt itches from loose poops, he needs the glands in his butt "expressed". There are these sac like glands back there that need to be relieved every once in a while and if your doggy doesn't have some nice hard poops it doesn't occur naturally and he needs some help with it. Groomer or Vet technician can do this for you. You don't want to do it. Stink oh stink oh stink, man makes your eyes water smells so bad.

he may have worms..
dont panick though. dogs eat grass and thats how they pick them up.
worms live in the intestine and lay their eggs around the anus. the eggs cause the dogd anus to become very itchy and rubbing along the floor will bring the dog relief. best bet is to go to the vet or local pet store and get a worming treatement.
it may cause your dog to have the runs for a few days but this ensures to get rid of the worms and eggs.
all dogs get worms at some point or another. i think you should regularly treat your dog for worms and fleas. talk to your vet

There are two glands located on either side of your dogs butt. I'm willing to bet they need to be drained. This would cause your dog to "scoot". A vet or groomer could show you how to do it yourself at home, but be warned that it smells horrific!
