Going "to" Canada you do not need a passport. Re-entering the USA by air you will need one now. By land and water you will need one to return to the USA effective January 2008.

American citizens only need a passport if flying into/out of Canada (new legislation came into effect Jan 23, 2007.)

If you're traveling by car or water... you just need a valid drivers license or birth certificate. (until sometime next year, when all travel will require a passport.)

If you are arriving by airplane or ship - you need a passport - if you are driving into Canada - no not until the end of 2007

Only if your flying you need a passport. If your driving across you only need a drivers license.
