Its sorta like their version of "Fluffing a Pillow". Its makes a comfortable little nest for them :)

They make their spot all comfy before they lay down! Also it's a relaxing thing for them to do.

Most likely a genetic force of habit. It seems almost like they are obsessive compulsive to make sure it's a good spot.

I do not know but I think that it is hilarious. Dogs are so wried about where they lay. I think that my lab does that just to fluffin up his pillow so he is comfy.!!!

Its a throw back from when they had to burrow dens and the more domesticated the breed the less they do it.
