A pit bull. They're really protective and loyal.
Plus most people are afraid of them; it would make them think twice about intruding.

All guarding breeds could be suitable but the character of the dog is the most important thing, you have to find one that has a temperament that suits you and your lifestyle. DO NOT buy a dog and keep it in a kennel. It doesn't have a hope in hell's chance of guarding your property if it cannot get in the property itself. It has to bond well with you so you need to spend a lot of time with it. DO NOT leave it alone for hours on end and expect good results. it won't happen. This is a big commitment you are taking on so think of all the pro's and con's before making this decision.
Hope this helps. Wendy

You shouldn't souly look at what dog at what dog would be ideal for protection - thats like choosing a husband because hes a kick boxer or a police man- you will have to live withthe dog for many years so look at personality traits , activity levels and other aspects of the breed

Alotof dogs are favolous guard dogs no matter what breed - true mineature poodles are not as scary looking as a larger dog - but generally any dog that bonds with you will guard you and your home. If your looking for a great dog try the city pound - there are litterally 100's there pure and mix breed of all ages - and are cheaper , and most likely just as good as purebreeds.

look for shepherd, rotties, collies, dobermans, anything really !! Dogs naturally look after eachother & owbers family its how they are think about wolf packs - dogs work the same way basically

We have an 8 year old who we were having to leave alone in the morning before school while dad went to work and I came home. We have a 5 lb. chihuahua, but felt like we needed something bigger. We got a 80lb. golden retriever/golden lab mix. He is wonderful. (Well, he has a chewing problem but he is young and we are working on that) He gets along well with the chihuahua. He does fine with my daughter. He does scare non-dog lovers when I walk him on the street because he is so big, but he wouldn't hurt a fly really. However, I do think he would bite if someone were trying to get in the house. He's very loyal!! He does need a lot of attention, so if you didn't have the time to walk him daily your house would be torn up when you got home-but really I would recommend that breed to anyone.

For all of you saying a Pit Bull. I own 2. I am highly educated on this breed and anyone else who is, would agree that APBT's are not meant to be guard dogs. It's idiots who train them to be who are partially responsible for the peril these dogs face.

You want a guard dog? Get a German Shepherd.

Most dogs will bark if a stranger comes around. What type of dog depends upon your surroundings. If you have small children, your not gonna want an aggressive breed. A lab will do just fine to scare someone off & still be great with the family.

German Shepherds, I am biased. I've grown up with them and have two of my own now. They are fab with children and very loving. Every dog has a different personality and so i think that has lots to do with it. The realationship you have with them plays a huge part. I think to a certain degree most dogs can be guard dogs... (with only a few exceptions!)

Any large dog with a loud bark(rottweiller, German shepherd, Dobermann's are reknowned for the guard dog properties), , it is wise to get a pup, so you can trained it and socialise it well to ensure you do not get one thats aggressive, you want to scare burgulars away not injure people. Always ensure you get a dog from a reputable breeder and attend puppy classes etc.

Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com, they have a little quiz that asks a bunch of questions then does a good job of compiling breeds that would be good for your lifestyle. It takes into account the guard/watch dog variations, and also looks into activity levels and time you can spend with the dog.

I own 2 red nose pit bulls they look scary but they are not a lot of people are scared of them so they will not intrude but if they did all that would happen is that they would get kisses. in my opinion you should never train a dog as a guard dog.

Any. If you train them right, the dog should be a great watch dog. You may want a bigger dog. People tend to be more likely to be a afraid of a larger dog.
