Basically it controls metabolism. If your thyroid doesn't function or you dont have one, you need to take thyroid hormones to prevent havinga host of problems. If you have too little hormone, you gain weight, become constipated, fatigued, depressed, cold because of low body temp and a host of other symptoms.
