Not sure but dont simply operate on that.

Honestly how well do you think the kid in charge can cope in crisis situations?

And how sensible are they?

And a good kid who only follows rules cannot be left on own as cant think creatively... ie smash a window in the event of a fire as scared of getting into trouble.

Likewise if somone knocks at the door do they leave the chain on and say mums in the shower?

Think fire, accident, they try and cook etc etc.

and are neighbours aware they are on their own and there to help?

Are they responsible?

its more then simply age?

If teenagers will they party, drink alcoghol, smoke dope, be making out with boy or girlfriend and not watching kid upstairs?

There is no law on the statute books.

However you could be considered guilty of neglect by social services if you leave a child under 13 alone at night or under 16 if they are considered vunerable or at risk

Regardless of the legalities, I would be very wary of leaving either of my kids at home alone overnight until they were at least 16. (Maybe older, depending on how responsible they are)

i don't know but, i did talk to the police about the legal age of a babysitter. i was told 12 but to use my discretion as not all 12 yr olds are responsible enough. i would say it depends on the child.
