Does anyone know anything about the native american's and where they live?

I have a strong connection with the native american way of life and was wondering if anyone out there knows anything where they live or used to live. I love listening to native american music and would love to visit somewhere one day but don't know where! Please could you give me any info on them if you can thanks!

They used to live all over America, and also in Canada. In Alaska, Florida, New Mexico, the Dakotas…there were Native Americans in every part of the country. Here in Pennsylvania, a lot of rivers and cities still have the names the local tribes gave them, and my city, Erie, is named after the tribe of Native Americans that once lived in this area. Each tribe, of which there were/are hundreds, have their own culture, language, and beliefs, although their way of life tended to be somewhat similar in many cases. Native Americans in Alaska were not the same as Native Americans in Virginia, who were also different from Native Americans from Arizona, for example.

Now, many Native Americans live in reservations, which are located all over the country, but mostly in the west. At first, Native Americans were forced to live on these reservations, but in modern times, it is voluntary. These reservations, land owned by a specific tribe, can be almost like their own little country, and often have different laws from the state they are located in (more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_reservation ). Many Native Americans also live in “regular” society as well, and it’s not at all uncommon for people of Native American heritage to live just like anyone else, in a normal house in a normal neighborhood.

The largest tribe in the United States in the Navajo (Dine) and they live in the four corners (Where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona meet).

Arizona and New Mexico have other famous tribes, including the Apache and Od'ham. And in the cities around these areas, you find relatively large populations of native Americans (University of Arizona, though all the way down in Tucson, has a respectable but small group of Navajo students.)

Living on the Navajo reservation can be interesting and depressing, I don't know about other ones. Flagstaff is where you go to shop, and sometimes due laundry (so you'll meet a lot there).

Washington state has reservations as well, and Seattle will have some native Americans.

Oklahoma used to be a big hub, many tribes being forced there, but it's not very native American compared to the states I've mentioned.

I noticed other people said Alaska. Officially, these are Inuit people.

There is no single Native American way of life. Just as Europe has different cultures, from Basques to Gypsies, Or Asia varies from Japanese to Mongolian, so too native Americans are very different (some are raiders, others farmers, others fishers).

But Arizona or New Mexico is probably the most "romantic" place for those who want to see "traditional" culture like pow wows etc.

Gosh, interesting question. There are Indian reservations in every state. However, most are just placed where the Native American population live, most aren't set up for any tourist trade, as there is nothing to see!

Every tribe is very different in their cultures, traditions, crafts, music etc. Is there a type that you are particularly interested in? Some of the tribes in the Southwest (Arizona/New Mexico) have areas open to tourists. I'm sure some of the Plains tribes have also, but I haven't been personally. I also enjoyed learning about the Inuit and other Northwest Coastal tribes when I visited the Washington & Canada area. Do some research on the internet.

Which ones? Native Americans were everywhere that is now called America already once the Europeans had the technology to sail their happy selves over the pond. If you want to self-sustain and live like an old-school indian there isn't much of that going on out here even in the western US. If you are interested in a native culture and experiencing it I would recommend trying a Central American country Research Belize or maybe Uruguay or something there is not alot of technological advancement widespread there and there are still Indian cultures around the area.

Or move to the US and go visit some reservations. Than you'll get the culture and an opportunity to gamble.... ^_^

Native American's live all across the United States. Indigenous people live all across the world.

If you love listening to Native music I would suggest attending a pow-wow. There are pow-wow's all over the U.S. There probably is one in your town, if not then probably in the nearest large city. All people are welcome to attend pow-wow's. Before attending google pow-wow etiquette and read up so you can make sure to be respectful. There are usually many vendors and you could buy some Native CDs.

Many still live on their reserves. A lot of the younger natives (thankfully) are integrating into our world so to speak to better their lives and futures. The reserves are all over N. America. Do some on-line checking.

There are lots of different tribes of Native Americans, and are scattered throughout the country. I have some Native American blood in me and I live in Washington. It just depends on what heritage you want to investigate.

We have a lot of native american groups here in California. Many of them now run casinos out in desert cities on reservations such as Palm Springs, Morongo, etc.
