Our public libraries provide many classes for children, teens, and adults. Almost all of them are free. Sometimes they even host small concerts and art exhibits.
I bring my children to many events that the libraries in my county provide. We go to story time, arts and crafts, and other activities for children.
We even take out DVDs and CDs free of charge.
Many libraries also offer excellent help with any type of research, including genealogy.
I would suggest checking out the website for your local library. I'm sure they have all of their activities and services listed on there.

My library did a survey of the community to identify needs. Then shifted the budget toward meeting those needs. It has a book sale once a month to raise money for lots of free programs. Books are donated by people in the community. A few times a month the library asks volunteers with an expertise in anything from a-z to give a talk on their subject. Could be taxes, finance, any money issue. Travel, art, hobbies, careers. Gardening ...well just about anything on the Yahoo Answers list. They also have a spot in the lobby for local artists to exhibit their work. They have boards for non profits to post their notices. They even have a cafe where people can stop and take time out. They have movies once a month, storytime for the kids.
Think of all the things that emcompass education and the benefits that follow, not too mention the good things that come from people connecting.

Libraries are a GREAT resource for:
Books
Videos
CDs
DVDs
Research materials on all kinds of subjects (such as companies in the US, facts and figures, census data, schools and universities, etc)
Internet
reading to children
reading to the elderly
Much, much more.
Visit your local library and ask the librarians for what services they provide.

Most libraries that I have been to offer many things to the community other than lending books.
Many offer mommy / daddy and baby classes for free.
Some will do research for you for a small fee.
They house many historical and important documents pertaining to the community.
They have genealogical meetings and organizations to help with the search of your roots.
Ours have a catalogue of birth and death records from our city that any one can see.
Computer and internet access
Some have small canteens and eating / meeting areas for people.
Book sales.
Some can order books for you.
The list keeps going on and on.
Some libraries offer more than others, but either way they are very important to the community.
Here is my communities library web site

Hope that it lends a light on your question.
Have you ever been to a library?
If you have, you would know the answer to your own question.
Just a thought. :)
