What if he wants his proper name capitalized but not his title? What if the Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't want a capital G? What if he wants the "o" capitalized instead? Would it be acceptable to call him "gOd" if that's what my gOd wants?

This type of response is a ruse used by those without a valid point to make to draw attention away from the fact that they cannot provide a meaningful answer.

I believe that would qualify as a minor ad hominem attack.

God is spelled with a capital G because He is not a thing, but a being. I could spell john kerry without capitalizing any letters and it would be a thing. But because it is written with capital letters, John Kerry is a person.

The same thing applies to God, although John Kerry and God are vastly different people.

A god (thing) versus God (name). It is that way because the Bible claims He is the One True God. Therefore, when I say God, you should know who I am talking about, rather than Zeus, the god, or Ceasar, who claimed he was a god or The God (God), which is, again, a name.

And the flying spaghetti monster would only have the first letter of his name capitalized if that were his name, like The Fantastic Four or The Hulk. However, seeing as there are numerous spaghetti meals going on at any one time across the planet, I highly doubt that there is only one.

If your gOd wants to have his or her name capitalized that way, so be it. It is between you and gOd. My God, however, is a being rather than a thing.

Thank you for your time.

It doesn't bother me if you don't capitalize the word god, it's not a proper name anyways, its more like a title. Sometimes I capitalize the word some times I don't.

The reason that people capitalize God when referring to Him is out of respect and reverence. It IS His name, so we capitalize it for that reason also (He has many names). Mainly though, capitalizing God versus spelling it as "god" sets Him apart from other gods. A god is someone created by humans to worship and is not real. GOD on the other hand is the almighty and only LIVING God who created us. We capitalize His name (and the words "His", "Him" and "He") to show that He is unlike any man-made gods, and to show reverence and respect for the almighty, omnipotent and omnipresent God that He is.

It's a name, so gramatically speaking the first letter should be capitalized. Then on the other hand you have some Jews who write "G-d" under the idea that his name shouldn't be written. Respect is so subjective!

Because god (note no capitalization) in my opinion, is a fairy tale. why should I capitalize something that's not real to me? I don't know why people are so obsessed with it.

Because they are silly. It's not proper to capitalize the god of Abraham, either, but a subset of silly Christians think "God" is their god's name.

"God" with a big "G" is a proper name for the One True God, and so should be capitalized. "God" with a little "g" means a false god.

I think because when we believe in God we want to show respect and the way to do that is by spelling it God, or He.
But I really don't care how you spell it, I know how important He is to me.

Someone else just noted that it was very offensive to be threatened with hell. Christians might be offended by the overt disrespect toward their father.

Seems the same to me. What kind of person does it take to commit the insult, and what kind of person does it take to feel insulted? Both are nonsense.

If you don't want to spell properly, that's your business. I personally won't feel hurt by it, but I can't take you seriously.
