I think a high fiber diet is a great idea. I try to eat as much fiber as I can throughout the day. The great thing about it is that it takes longer to digest so you will remain full for a longer period of time.

Remember, though, not to limit yourself too greatly where food is concerned. High fiber is good, but remember to also include plenty of fruits, veggies, dairy and protein. You'll also want to be sure to drink plenty of water. Good luck!

First, a word of caution. The word diet is often misused. People often associate "diet" with just losing weight, but anything we eat is part of our daily "diet". It's with this in mind that one wants to create a balanced diet, one lower in fats and sugars, higher in fiber, minerals and vitamins.

High fiber diets are good for many reasons. They help prevent cancer and can have many beneficial health effects. A diet high in fiber also creates a "full" feeling, causing us to be less hungry or desire less food. Fiber (whether insoluble or soluble) is not digested well in the stomach and small intestine. So few calories are involved. It is "fermented" by bacteria in our large intestine where beneficial acids are created. High fiber diets will attract lots of water (so be sure to have a high water content in your diet), will soften stool and, at least intially, will cause more "gas" and you may need to relieve yourself more frequently. This is perfectly normal - but just be prepared. It is a very healthy way to eat as one isn't consuming a lot of calories, but will actually feel quite full.

One of my dogs, who has sadly since passed on, was at one point in his life very heavy. He was given special vet recommended food. This was a high fiber item and it caused him to "go"quite a bit. But he was also able to rapidly lose weight with it - which I believe extended his life (and eased arthritis pain as he aged). I know from personal experience that a higher fiber diet does work well. If I combine it with exercise and overall healthy foods, weight will come off faster than if I eat a more "normal" diet (with far less fiber).

I've provided a link that discusses some aspects of fiber. But as others stated, please be sure to eat other food items and ensure that you get a lot of fluid intake as well.
