Because the people selling them made it clear that if they did not buy one they would judge them as atheist. Something that until quite recently ( still true in some places in the south ) could end up being a dangerous label to have.

Because people are starting to say it's a hate book because it says allot of the things people do these days are wrong and no one like to be told they are wrong.
Biggest thing I have heard lately is that the Bible tells people that being gay is an abomination in the eyes of God.
Lets just say that doesn't go over well

Well there are more bibles on this planet than there are people... plus there are 2.1 billion christians on the planet and they all like to own at least one copy (sometimes several) and then you factor in all the hotel rooms, churches and other places they appear...
Interestingly it's also the most shoplifted/stolen book in the world. Go figure.

I remember about 20 years ago my Sunday school teacher telling me that the Bible is the most popualar/least read book.

People seem compelled to buy the thing, for some reason. Of course the notion that a lot of people buy it doesn't indicate that they read it, or believe it, or that it's particularly good.
During Hitler's regime, "Mein Kampf" was a best seller.

Most ppl want to search for spiritual answers, and seeing that prophecy from the bible has been fulfilled, Like Jesus what town he would be born in etc. it draws ppl to look for answers. it also has some great story's in it too. and if your a believer it gives you strength peace and help in a time of need.
