Just to clarify - it is very offensive to be threatened with eternal torture.
Even if you think I'm wrong, you should find it offensive if I tell you that you deserve to be tortured forever and that I believe this is just and fair. Furthermore, I continually bring up how much you deserve the torture and how much I support my Boss who will be doing it to you.
I don't have to believe in you and your boss to be hurt by that. Why is that so fantastically difficult for you to comprehend?

I'm offended at a God who would threaten his creation with any kind of torture. It's his fault if things go wrong and it's his responsibility to fix it.
As a parent, I don't have that lack of responsibility. If my kid screws up, it's my responsibility to teach him/her how to do it right. If they upset or offend me, we discuss it and work it out. I don't ever torture them and any kind of punishment is temporary..it's to teach a lesson not condemn them.
I don't get offended with the threats of christians.. they don't bother me.. if they want to bow down to that god, that's fine with me.. I'm not going to do it no matter how many times they threaten me with hell.

Saying someone is gonna go to hell for not believing what you believe in is wrong on many levels.
1. You assume to play the role of God. How do you know where theyre gonna go after they die??? God is God. He can forgive anyone and anything and you have no idea what is gonna happen to anyone, including yourself.
2. By saying someone else is going to hell you silently say: youre not going there, so youre better than they are.
Again, VERY wrong. And people should have a little more understanding towards each other.

I don't like being patronized by someone who is incapable of rational argument without resorting to threats.
Here's a real response from an unnamed Y/A user in regards to a question about God punishing others:
"I know that you are making a joke but the sad part is that it will hurt. The Hurt will never end, never stop and never go away... So it is solely up to you where you go. Enjoy."
That's really insulting, whether you believe in Hell or not. Thumbs down for that.

Who is doing the threatening?
Perhaps some are tactless, like immature children in proclaiming this message,
but the doctrine does not originate with them.
It was Jesus Christ who said "if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to be thrown into Hell." (Matthew 5:30)
Jesus was so convinced of the truth of what He said, that He let Himself be tortured to death so that others could escape such a fate.
Now, supposing Jesus really is God, come down from heaven, come to warn you, having a perfect understanding of the true nature of things, and yet you scoff at Him and turn away laughing.
If you should close your eyes and open them in the midst of flames, how will you live with your arrogance for all eternity, when it didn't have to end that way?

Threat of punishment as a means of control of others is
bad control at best. Most people respond negatively to threats. They either openly rebel or those that don't become submissive and fearful or secretly rebel anyway.
Recall when you were young, did threat of punishment from your parents really help you to do the right thing???

It hurts me more that, by implication, many of the people I love very much are being threatened with hell. I am offended at the sheer arrogance of the statement. The people who say this no nothing of me, of my friends, of some of the beautiful non-Christians that I love very much, and yet they are so blasted ARROGANT that they think they have the right to condemn me and them to eternal suffering. for DISAGREEING with them?!? It's ludicrous, and hurtful, and in my opinion deeply out of line with what Jesus taught in the Bible. He sat beside the "sinners" and befriended them. He helped those who disagreed with them. Those who claim to follow him and then threaten people gleefully with hell are the ones who would deserve to go if there were such a thing.
(I, too, am starting to get very angry, Laptop Jesus.)

Well because being threatened by anything is bad. For instance, if I believe in a large beast that comes to your house and rips all the bones out of your body and stabs your friends with them if you don't have a Nintendo DS... and you don't have one and I'm like "The BONE RIPPER IS COMING", you're gonna be like "OMG NO. NOT THAT. I don't believe in that but up yours for threatening me, dude."
Real christians do NOT threaten people. Idiots who are pretending to be Christians are destroying the religion.
Really tho...
Get a DS.

It's not the threat of hell itself, since we don't really believe it exists, but rather, the hypocrisy and the aggressive manner in which the message is conveyed
It goes against religious teachings imho and I dare say, that moderate religious people are just as offended by that
penguin hit it just right, it IS condescending, as though they are morally superior in some way, which is ironic don't you think?

Don't you get offended when you are threatened? Hell is beside the point. By what authority do you threaten anyone with anything? Are you in a position of superiority, or judgement? What qualifications do you have to threaten someone?
Read your own scripture, and just try and follow the instructions of your Master. (Hint: It isn't Paul)

Yeah, there's malice and fear behind any threat. When the masses were burning people for being accused of being a witch; now, everyone knows there's no such thing (that version, at least) but the fire was real enough.
