An essay does NOT have to be neutral, it is not news that is seeking to be impartial. Essays are often written as arguments for or against a policy. BBC did a documentary called Hiroshima (NetFlix carries it if you use them) which I felt was very fair (since it was a British film). It would give you an idea of which side might be more supportable.
Since your question asks which side we would choose...I would have to side with Truman's decision: Japan was given opportunity to surrender twice and chose not to. Pride got them in trouble, in my opinion. Furthermore, the role of government is primarily security. The U.S. was operating to provide the greatest security for its troops and Japan failed to keep its own country safe by accepting surrender (amazingly even after the first bomb). Just my own opinion.

Why would you have to choose a side? Writing an essay has nothing to do with your personal values or beliefs. You're being asked to write why the U.S. dropped the bomb.
Research the matter, find out why the U.S. government felt that was the best course of action at the time, and write about that.
Opinions are for blogs, not essays.

No, there's no need to choose a side, you can if you'd like to, but it's not necessary for writting the essay. You may focus on the facts and expose the reasons that led to the dropping and the historical events which had it as a consequence.

You have to read the background to make a decision on which side to choose.. in support of the bombing or against the bombing (why the US should or should not have dropped the bomb)

if i remember correctly it was est. that approx. 1 to 2 million soldiers would die invading japan, what brought them to this conclusion was iwo jima. so we nuked them, and in my opp ion this also saved the Japanese race, because we would of have to killed almost everyone of them due to there divine wind belief, which was totally misused to mislead their people unto their deaths
