The sporophyte produces spores (hence the name), by meiosis.
The gametophyte produces gametes.

The term sperm is derived from the Greek word spermos meaning "seed" and refers to the male reproductive cells. Sperm cells are the smaller gametes involved in fertilization in anisogamy and oogamy. In these types of sexual reproduction, there is a marked difference in the size of the gametes with the smaller one being termed the "male" or sperm cell. A uniflagellar sperm cell that is motile is also referred to as spermatozoon, whereas a non-motile sperm cell is referred to as spermatium.
The spermatozoa of animals are produced through spermatogenesis inside the male gonads (testicles) through meiosis. Sperm cells in algal and many plant gametophytes are produced in male gametangia (antheridia) through mitosis. In flowering plants, sperm nuclei are produced inside pollen.

An ovum (plural ova) is a haploid female reproductive cell or gamete. The word is derived from Latin, meaning egg or egg cell. Both animals and embryophytes have ova. The term ovule is used for the young ovum of an animal, as well as the plant structure that carries the female gametophyte and egg cell and develops into a seed after fertilization. In some plants, such as algae, it is also called oosphere.

Spore produced from sporophyte develops into individual thallus or plant and generating gametophyte .The mature gametophyte produces male or female gametes (or both) by mitosis. The fusion of male and female gametes produces a zygote which develops into a new sporophyte. This cycle is known as alternation of generations or alternation of phases.
