I appreciate the police preventing anarchy, but...If the majority of cops are good, why do they tolerate the bad cops? What's with this code of silence thing? Isn't your loyalty supposed to be to justice first? How can you be for truth and justice and allow other cops to trample on it? SERPICO!!!!

I have a grudging respect for cops, because they have to put up with some of the lowest-common-denominator pieces of sh** on the face of the planet on a daily basis.

There will always be bad cops, because they are human. It is the responsibility of other cops to speak out against them - unfortunately they tend to stay a very tight knit group. Their dedication to each other is strong (which is the only reason that more of them don't end up dead on the street), so even when they know who is doing bad stuff, they usually justify it to themselves that those cops are just doing what they have to do to get the job done.

The real trick is to make sure that if you see a cop doing something they shouldn't be, report them to internal affairs.

I cannot speak for officers in other jurisdictions, but in my area (Southern States) most officers want to represent the people with the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

In my own agency, there is no doubt by ANY officer that should one of them do something illegal or improper they will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

As a detective myself, I will target a "bad apple" in my profession as officers MUST maintain the highest standards or else suffer the "tarnished badge" from the publics view.

It's hard enough fighting the bad guys let alone those who've lost trust in the police.

So, in response to your question about tolerating bad cops...I am an officer who doesn't!!

By the way...I can't help but kind of chuckle when I see some responses about "good cops aren't republican" or "a bunch of underpaid and undereducated" breed of people. I consider the source and simply reply that we are, in many cases underpaid but that also I'm conservative and college educated like many in my profession.

Best wishes!

Most cops are honest and a few even concerned about justice. Far too many are paid squat to risk their lives without any real training. Unfortunately a good deal of training that is offered is more about getting around the rules rather than doing honest old fashioned police work, like learning how to trick peole into confessing, and how to use the position in order to intimidate people.

well ok first thing about cops is that they are people - and not the brightest people as it doesn't take a lot to become a cop. So yes, they will have bad cops - and quite a few of them - depending on where you live. Just as you tolerate some ****** at your work because denoucing him would make you look bad and might ruin opportunities for you to move up , they do the same thing. Winnipeg cops are the worst - I was stopped and harrased for my car 9 times in 2 months when I moved there - without ever getting a ticket. Generally the bad cops are the older ones - higher in rank - so who is going to take a stand against them?

Cops are never good cops if they bust innocent people for smoking weed who are not bothering or threatening anyone. If you live in medical marijuana or legalized state then this doesn't apply to you, I'm sure you hate the fact that you can't anymore.

Can't say that I disagree with you, but if you open your mouth and nothing is done about the bad cop(s), you end up setting yourself up for a very tough career. It takes a very tough person to be able to see this through to the end. Yeh Serpico!

Because of some unwritten code.

For example when I finally came forward on a discrimination case to testify against two supervisors, I lost my job within 2 months.

Normally most just don't want to risk thier jobs.
