My parakeet did the same thing when I first got him. It took him about 3 months to really get chirping. I know most people said a mirro and another bird is the answer. I do not believe so however. I mirror can cause your bird to become aggressive and not love you or your children as much because he will then think he has a mate.
Another thing that could be affecting your bird is the toys. It took me forever to find a toy that my parakeet loved to play with. It finally came down to if it doesn't have a bell or strings (preening type toys) he doesn't want to play with it. When he plays with his bell toys he chirps non stop.
Another thing you can do is talk to your bird. Talking to your bird enough will sometimes cause them to chirp back to you.
My parakeet also loves music. He will chirp and spin in circles whenever I play it.
One thing that I did notice with my parakeet was that he was extremely young when I got him, about 3 months, so I think maybe he was too young and didn't quite know how to do too much. So maybe this is the case with your bird.
With your birds toys show your bird that he is supose to ding the bells and things. Like someone else said whistle at your bird. I also make kissing sounds to my bird and he can now mimick that sound.
Just give him time. Do not go out and get another bird just yet. Give him a couple more months. Just give him time to bond with you.

He's no doubt very sad. Parakeets are about the most social of all birds. In the wild, they will travel in flocks of thousands. Please, please get another bird. Parakeets (budgies) can get a bit psychotic, are apt to become mean and afraid of everything if left alone their entire lives. I have 11 budgies and even though they may squabble a bit and vie for the best cage space, at least they're normal and happy. Cage positioning in your house is also extremely important. Put him where there is a lot of activity, and move him & cage at nightm if needed where it's quiet so he can sleep. Also, time out of the cage is necessary as is interaction with you and the family. They must have a flock and if made to feel a part of the family, will accept you and your family as their "flock". Another budgie companion however is the best and the same thing applies. Also when training to perch on your finger, be prepared for a bite or two. Don't ever strike or in any way show anger towards the little guy. Their bites, even though they're not fun to get, really don't hurt much and usually don't draw blood - unless they're really scared or really don't want to do whatever it is you're wanting them to do. The more contact though, the less they fear that you will eat them and the less they'll bite. Try holding the little guy in your hand and cupping him to your heart. Hold him there for about 30 min all the while stroking and scratching his head and talking in soft tones. Then let him perch on your finger. He may stay, or he may fly off. Repeat this until he wants to be with you. Females bite harder than males. If your bird is young but you can see what color his cere (where the nostrils are-blue are males; brown-female) is going to be, then get the same sexed bird- unless you want babies in about a year. Budgies can bond male/female, male/male, fem/fem and it's really wonderful to watch them preen one another. They really need companions so please, if at all possible, get another budgie. If not, then make sure he gets pleanty of attention, gets time out of his cage every day and is made to feel part of the family. There are so many other factors to know and I would suggest getting a book. I've recommended one below. If you want a happy and healthy bird, please take this seriously.

Do you know how old the bird is? Is it a female or male? You miss out a LOT of details!!!
Most likley the bird is young or a female. Only mature male parakeets sing. If the skin around its norstils is pinky-brown it is probably a female, if it is bright blue then its a male. Good luck!

You may have just picked a quiet bird. They all have different personalities. After a month the bird should be happy and chaty in his new environment. Maybe he or she might like to have the company of another bird. Try putting a mirror in the cage, if you dont already have one.

They usually are very social birds. You would be better served to purchase a second one. They will play together, scream, chirp and basically have a great time together. Everyone and everything needs a friend.
