I have a dog who is just a little over a year old. She recently has gone into heat for the second time! I have decided I am going to get her fixed because it benefits both her and me. I was just wondering whether or not this will help calm her down a bit, so she will not be so jumpy/hyper all the time. She is a miniature schnaunzer. Thanks a head of time!!

There are many good reasons to spay a dog, but to stop her from being "jumpy" is not one of them. She will be just as playful as she is now. She will probably calm down as she ages.

I have heard that it does calm them down... but I don't know if it applies to males more than females... or vice versa. I had a VERY hyper female, and had the same expectations after getting her fixed, but I really didn't notice a difference in her hyper/jumpyness. Mine was a lab mix though... very hyper dogs to begin with. I can't say that I know anything about your breed. Good Luck!!

Spaying does not calm a dog or change their jumpy/hyper behavior. Only training will do this.
Congratulation son being a responsible pet owner and having her spayed :)

Spaying is the best thing to do for her health, no question, but to calm down her hyper personality is going to require exercise, training and time (she's only a year old!). Her personality is not going to change through spaying - try a little obedience with her to exercise her mind, that'll help, combined with lots of exercise.

It might, but I'm suspecting not. There are lots of good reasons for spaying and neutering, but the only personality trait it really seems to affect is aggression. My dogs' basic personalities really didn't change at all. My male is laid back as he always was and my female is as energetic as ever.

Keep in mind at one year she is still pretty much a puppy and may settle down a bit as she gets older. Or not.

yes it will but not a whole lot. If she is hyper now she will always be. It sounds like she is still in her puppy time. She will calm down the older she gets

My dog was older when she was fixed, but it made a big difference in her behaviors. She was so much more mellow, seemed less distracted, and even a bit more loving. I think you're making a good choice to have her fixed if you don't want her to have puppies. Have a great day! Annie

it may help but untill your dog reaches about three years old they are still a puppy/young dog and will have puppy energy. just try to get her out for a walk or run at least once a day to get her extra energy out.
