The Dr should be weaning off of this bit by bit so he doesn't have withdrawal symptoms

I would suggest he visit a Detox centre where they can monitor him while he comes down and can give him methadone and what not if they feel he is in a dangerous state of withdrawal.... they will prolly try to ask him to stay for the rehab program but it is not mandatory and he could leave as soon as he felt well enough to go home

I've been to such a place myself.. it really did help because there were a lot of ppl in my situation - made me feel better about the whole thing

you're friend however might be skeptical about being in a professionally monitored place like that but the patients seriously outnumber the workers so you really dont have to feel like you're being babysat

also: workplaces are legally forced to allow a leave of absence to attend such a place and where ur going can be kept as private as u like

HOWEVER, if he absolutely protests going, there are a few things you could try at home (things we did to help ease the pain in detox anyways):

- warm baths
- lots of sleep
- heatlhy food (NO SUGAR... sugar is a big trigger with addiction)
- exercise or physical activity (try to get his heart beat going naturally - the natural high can safely calm the chemical withdrawal)
- coaching, (for psychological parts of his withdrawal u can rly help by reminding him why he is stopping and that ppl are prolly very proud if he is trying to quit an addiction)... coming back to reality can be scary if u do it all alone!

Good luck!! The withdrawal will be rough but once it subsides (I promise it will lol) things will only start to get better!

There are many narcotic drugs that are used for moderate to severe pain relief. Always remember, you cannot get addicted to these drugs as long as the drugs are used for pain. Your brain along with your body is very smart in this area. If these drugs are not being used for actual pain relief, addiction will be quick and hard to beat.

DETOX - then when he is done get him to a meeting of Alcoholics or Narcotics anonymous. This is not ANYTHING to take lightly. You are not a DOCTOR.
