I am selling my car. I already have a buyer. My question is how do I do this? Do I need to have the title, (the vehicle is paid off) do I just write a bill of sale? Please help. Thank you.

In most states, you have to have to sign the title over to the buyer. You will also need the bill of sale. Sometimes, depending on the state, you will have to fill out some kind of release of liability form so the state knows you no longer own the car. That way if the buyer has an accident or gets a parking ticket, it doesn't come back to you. There is a good web site that will help you with your individual state (http://www.dmv.org/state-regulations.php). Just choose your state and it will take you to the regulations for selling vehicles.

I assume you have the title and it shows that the vehicle is clear of liens. The title should have a place to fill in the buyer's name etc. Make sure that gets filled out. I would also do a simple bill of sale and have the buyer sign it.

What you are after is protection from liability in case the buyer fails to register the vehicle right away. In an accident, you would still be shown as the owner unless you have evidence otherwise.

are you normans mother? psycho... kidding If its paid off you should have the title.. you have to sign the back of the title with correct milage and date etc. and write bill of sale make sure you write that the car is sold " As Is" implying theres no warranty from you. Example : I Mrs bates sell my 96 car to joe johnson on june 10 ,07 for X amount of dollars It has 39000 miles and is being sold AS IS. signed mrs bates june 10,07 If you got a scanner/copier make a copy for yourself before hand and have him sign your copy .

All you need is to sign over the title.

Make sure you notify the DMV of the sale so your name can be removed or you'll be held responsible for all future tickets/accidents/crimes.
