When both my sons were at the age where they were starting to learn how to tie their shoes, I had them take the shoe, place it on the table and I did the same. Then I walked them through it a few times, allowing them to watch the way that I did it, then we did it together, taking each step very slowly until they got it right. Took about a half hour for the first actual tie on both their parts, and after that, it became much easier as they did it. Of course, a reward to McDonalds afterwards lets them know they did well! Hope that helps!

I was not good at teaching my kids to tie thier shoes. For some reason the way I tie my shoes is confusing, even to some adults. I can double knot a shoe, and still pull it out with a tug on just one shoe string, which seems simple and normal to me, but anyway, point being I was confusing my kids. My Mom just happens to be a lefty, so when she tied thier shoe, it looked the same to them as if they were doing it, instead of backwards, and that made it really easy for them. They picked it up in one day, compared to my few weeks.

Sit on the bed or floor with your child in front of you, facing the same way as you. You reach around from behind the child and tie his or her shoe, explaining each step as you go. If you face the child while tying the shoe, it's harder for him/her to see what your hands/fingers are doing. Small shoes have short laces that can be difficult to tie. Start on a shoe that has the longest laces you can find. Finally, practice lots and be patient!

Actually... I learned the REAL way to tie shoes from a fellow classmate in 1st grade. Until then I just couldn't seem to get it right sooo this is how my dad taught me (and he still ties them this way): make a loop with each string and tie the 2 loops together. It'll be just enough to give them confidence after saying they can tie their own shoe.... and with enough practice of the other way they can get it right... always having the easy way to fall back on so they don't get so upset if they can't get it right at first.

The old fashioned way. Give them one of your shoes to practice with. Show them several times slowly how to tie shoes. Then watch them do it. Correct them gently when they do something wrong. I use to give my kids about 30 minutes a day to work on it. They'd get too frustrated after that. I use the bunny story too. About the bunny running around the tree and jumping down in the hole and coming out the other side. It takes time and patience but they will learn. I was lucky, my oldest literally learned to tie his shoes in 10 minutes. My middle child was the one who took weeks to learn. My youngest picked it up in about a week. Just encourage them and they'll get it.

My daughter is 4 years old and she learned how to tie her shoe by watching other little kids. Her best friend who is a year older than her thought her to tie her shoes. It takes time and patience, and my daughter is teaching her little brother who is 3 how to tie his shoes. Its amazing how kids learn from each other.
