Also, by assault, I mean outside of the ring. Sorry.

Remember this incident?

James "The Harlem Hammer" Butler effectively ended his professional boxing career by striking Richard Grant with a taped fist after losing a ten-round super middleweight contest. The blow dropped Grant to the canvas and left him coughing up blood. The journeyman boxer was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan and later released being treated for lacerations to his tongue and a broken jaw.

Grant had attempted to console and embrace Butler after winning a unanimous decision by scores of 97-93, 96-94, and 97-93, in their 10-round bout. However, Butler who already had his gloves cut off, paused for an instant, and then drilled Grant with a roundhouse right square on the jaw.

Grant went down like a man who had been shot. With the crowd at the Roseland Ballroom chanting, "Lock him up!" Butler was escorted from the ring by law enforcement officials and later arrested and booked on felonious assault charges.

--Bad Timing--

Butler couldn't have picked a worse moment to stage his unprovoked attack. New York Boxing Commissioner Ray Kelley was in attendance along with approximately 500 New York City Policemen, who were being honored.

Well he did time and was suspended. after his release Sam Kellerman took him in to help him out and then...

Boxer James Butler Jr., who fought under the moniker "The Harlem Hammer," was sentenced Wednesday to nearly 30 years in prison for the death of sports journalist Sam Kellerman.

Butler will also pay $17,853 in funeral expenses to Kellerman's family, $10,000 to the state's victim restitution fund and $11,882 to the owner of the victim's apartment, which was left torched and blood-soaked after the killing, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office.

Kellerman's body was found in his Hollywood apartment on Oct. 17, 2004, near a hammer

This doesn't answer your question exactly but it is an example. I think that suspension and fines is all they are able to do but the legal lines should be harsher. That can't come from the boxing commision though it has to come from the courts. Boxing helps a lot of people off the streets but doesn't dismiss them from punishments or the law.

It depends on who the boxers involved are and the extent of the injury, if any. Odds are the commission uses monetary penalties before anything any more serious.
