Pollution can be caused in a pond in different ways:
- dumping of detergents or fertilizers into pond.
Detergents and fertilizers are rich in phosphates and hence result in luxuriant growth of water weeds like Eichhornia(water hyacinth), Pistia, etc. These plants then tend to spread over the entire surface of the pond thereby throttling the pond-dwelling organisms
These detergents & fertilizers may also lead to luxuriant growth of algae causing sudden exponential spurt of algal population (called "algal bloom") These algal blooms rapidly use up dissolved oxygen in the pond water to themselves and deprive other pond dwelling organisms like fish, insects, etc of oxygen, causing them to die. (called B.O.D. or biological oxygen demand)
Rich sewage also cause the same effect.
- Pesticides can cause pollution often.
harmful pesticides like DDT, malathion when sprayed to plants often tend to mix with water sources like ground water and with water bodies like rivers, ponds and even ocean due to seasonal events like rain, storms, etc. These pesticides when taken in small quantities(in picograms) show no visible effects. But they have a property of magnifying their potency when passing on from one animal to another in the food chain. For example, consider a rabbit eats a grass which has minute traces of pesticide (10ng), when the rabbit is eaten by a hawk, the quantity magnifies (becomes for example 100ng). When a hawk is in turn eaten by a still higher predator, the pesticide quantity magnifies (say 1000ng). This phenomenon is called biological magnification.
The general effects of pesticides(in significant amounts) is that they cause severe disorders of the brain leading to nervous system defects like paralysis. They also may lead to death.
-Throwing of solid wastes like tins, garbage, etc into ponds can cause obstruction to the normal activities of plants and animals leading to severe consequences
-The pond water when polluted can cause smell. The flora and fauna of the pond will ultimately die. And the water body then is said to be "dead".

They say Prevention is better than cure. Therefor preventing pollution is the only way to protect water bodies. This can be done by abstaining use of pesticides and using biocides and other natural means of pest control.
Sewage water should be chanelled in such way that it shouldnt mix with ground water and then should be treated in treatment plants before releasing it into the rivers.

That would depend on what happened to the pond? What is the point source pollution i.e. parking lot, leaking sewer, landscaping chemicals?

I don't have information, but effects would be...
*Death or illness of wildlife (fish, birds, any animal that drinks out of the pond
*Smell
*Loss of water and/or home for wildlife.
