Well if you are trying to impress a date I don't think a bbq joint is exactly the place to go, but probably the best places are Dinosaur, up in Harlem, and Virgils, in the theater district.

If you're trying to impress a date with a BBQ joint in New York City I'd head over to Blue Smoke on 27th and Park. (And afterward you can take her to their sister jazz club in the basement - Jazz Standard). But call right now to make a reservation otherwise you'll end up standing and waiting at the bar for hours to get a table and even then you might not get one.

RUB is good but decor is not even close to Blue Smoke. Dallas BBQ on 23rd and 8th is good even if it has a Chili's approach to pushing food.
Summay: Blue Smoke won't let you down.
