Unless you have a compound fracture (a bone fracture or break where the bone is protruding from the skin) it will be pretty impossible to tell whether you broke your hand or not. Your hand and fingers have 27 little bones called phalanx and metacarpal bones, and because of their small size it will be hard to tell without an X-ray. It also matters how you fell, the angle you hit your hand, etc. There is even the possibility of a broken wrist, because sometimes with wrist fractures you feel the pain in your hand because of the way your nervous system is set up. Your hand might be swollen, but that is not a sure sign of a break, just banging your hand can sometimes cause it to swell and hurt. I would wait a few hours and R.I.C.E it. RICE- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Wait and see how you are feeling in a few hours and if it still hurts call your doctor (preferably and orthopedic surgeon) or go to the Emergency Room so they can perform some X-rays. Hope it feels better! Check out my sources, they will additional usefull information to determine if your hand is broken and what type of break it could be.

Probably not. Breaking is accompanied by a lot of swelling (it'd balloon up).

Depending on what you banged, you may have pinched a nerve. The pinky & ring finger are contolled by the same nerves/tendons that run through a channel in your wrist and up around that annoying bump inside your elbow. How long has it hurt? May be bruising, may be irritation to one of the above.

Put an ice pack on it to keep it from swelling, and get to the doctor for an x-ray. That's the only way they are going to be able to tell if it's broken or just badly sprained.

Dear Bob: Having not examined your hand, I can definitely say that you need to show it to a doctor. That'll be $250, and I don't take medicaid.

i'm sorry! i think that if the pain lasts for more than 2 more hours, you should schedule a doctor's appointment to make sure that you didn't experience a fracture. feel better

It is either bruised or broken. You would do well to go to a doctor and get this seen to.
