I have SAD and I recently went to see my doc about it-he has prescribed zoloft as a daily med and Klonopin for when I feel really anxious about going into a certain situation. I have only been on it for 2 weeks and so far have not noticed a change, but I am hoping for the best. Good Luck~

I have a level of social anxiety myself. I also have generalized anxiety, depression and another anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd). There are medications that are used to help treat the SAD such as the ssri (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant medications including Prozac (which I take), Zoloft, Paxil (and celexa?). Ssri's typically take at least 4-6 weeks to start working.

Please do seek a therapist who treats those with anxiety disorders in his or her practice. That may be a clinical psychologist, and please make sure that which ever therapist you go to, is licensed. The therapist may recommend cognitive-behavioral therapy as one of the ways to deal with anxiety in social situations. He or she may talk to you about stress management techniques such as (slow) deep breathing which really helps me. Slowly breathing in thru the nose and then out thru pursed lips. And make sure that you don't do that too fast or can hyperventilate. I do that a couple of times and then do natural breaths afterwards.

When I'm in a social situation, namely a crowd of people such as at a party or social gathering, I gravitate towards small groups and take breaks as well. I also try to prime myself beforehand and try to remember that everyone is basically insecure on some levels and that we are all human beings and no one is perfect. People are always going to find something to say about another person regardless of how flawed or flawless ;) he or she is. Please do get yourself some help as it can really help you to enjoy your life that much more, and it's best not to self-diagnose and treat oneself but to get a diagnosis by a professional.

Talk to a doctor first. I take Celexa for anxiety, and it is the best thing I've done for myself in a long time. It is a subtle change, but a definite one.
