Viral meningitis is just another virus, you catch it just like you catch a cold! There is little anyone can do in terms of prevention, and there are currently no vaccines. Finally viral meningitis may be the result of infection from several different organisms, this means you can get it more than once.

Hi Chris, I have had Viral Meningitis myself and i know how your sister feels. The doctors told me that either your a carrier or not, and there is no telling who is and who isn't. For some reason the virus lays dormant and one day it just leaps into action. As soon as i had a spinal tap, the pressure in my head started to subside and things started to improve. I had it about 8 years ago, when i was about 27/28 and haven't had it since. The doctors do say you are more prone to it again but touch wood, i haven't. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to prevent it again. And just like myself, your sister will be thankful its just the Viral form. Hope she gets better soon.

Viral meningitis is usually contracted by direct contact with respiratory secretions. (ie, saliva, mucus, etc.) She could have touched something infected, shook hands, or anything else that brings direct contact.
The best way to prevent it is good hygiene like washing hands, disinfecting surfaces, etc.
I hope she gets better soon and that the rest of your family stays healthy!
The website has some more info on it...
