Yes ellipticals are considered one of the best cardio machines because they are the same as running, but you don't get the "shock" coming down onto the ground as you do in running, so it saves your joints and your back and you can go on for longer.
I got on the elliptical years ago and it's still my favorite, I burn 400 calories in 40 minutes and feel great, not exhausted, afterward.

I've used both treadmills AND ellipticals-- and ellipticals have always shown a higher calorie count per hour as far as what you're burning-- very effective-- and its lower impact. You can also turn up the resistance just a tiny bit and burn even more.
Works great!

I don't think it's quite the same because you don't exert the same forces. That said it's a great substitute because you lack the running forces, so you can stay super fit with great legs and you won't have the impact on your knees which can cause them to deteriorate. This also makes it better than a treadmill.

You would have to do it about twice as long or maybe longer to get the same effect because you don't have the wind resistance. It also makes it so easy that it doesnt force certain muscles to work like they would if you were running outside. Sorry. You will still get a good work out, but not as good.

It isn't as high intensity as running but it is a good work out if you work hard on the elliptical. It is also better on your joints - it's not a high impact work out.

Yes. It gives the same motion as running but also includes the upper body more. Has less impact on your joints too.
If your guy has diffrent types it is important to find one that fits your stride patern. Otherwise you will not get the full effect of the machine.

not the same as running. its easier on the joints though and u can get a good work out as long as u keep ur heart rate up. and with the treadmill, yeah that can get boring, but how about mixing things up such as interval training and also walking on incline (elevates the butt)

elliptical is very low impact, unlike running. it is a good exercise and can make you sweat and burn calories, but it is different than running. It uses different muscles. Both are good for weight control.
