I am looking for a rough estimate. Does somewhere between $1000 and $2000 sound right? It doesn't really matter as I am will ing to pay anything to have sammy home safe but I would like to be prepared.

I agree with the answer ahead of me. The best one to ask is the veterinarian who is going to do the surgery. Abdominal hernias are common in young animals (I assume your cat is still young) and are often repaired at the time the animal is spayed or neutered. This will save you the costs of a second anesthesia. Surgical repair is usually very simple and can be done by any veterinarian. A specialist should not be necessary unless the hernia is unusually difficult to fix.

$1000-$2000 is too much for a simple hernia. If you were given this estimate than your vet may expect difficulties during surgery prolonging the repair. Are you sure the hernia is abdominal? You should discuss this in detail and know everything before you agree. An estimate should be given in writing to you with a list of every single item you are charged for, i.e., hospitalization, medications, surgery, anesthesia, blood tests, etc. Prices vary between animal hospitals. Occasionally, it may be worth getting a second opinion. However, if you trust the veterinarian and you have heard good things about her/him it may be worth paying the higher price.

The vet who diagnosed the condition can give you an estimate, or refer you to a surgeon. Costs will vary depending on the nature of the practice (i.e., referral and specialty practices generally more expensive than local general practitioners). If you have any doubts, get a second opinion.
