In the case of the Jews, it caused much animosity among the Christian community. Was self-segregation the Jews' choice or was it forced on them? I think total segregation, such as hermits, has something to do with a mental disorder.
I am becoming more and more segregated in a new group and much more distant from a former group. I don't see it as a problem -- I simply have new interests and don't have time for former interests.
Very interesting question requiring much thought. Robert 1 mentions keeping the holy separate from the profane. I think of that as being a good thing, but is it really?

actually the prophets of God taught segregation and forbid to marry outside of the religious covenant with Moses abraham and during the days of Noah.
Cain followed satan, and the children of noah were commanded not mix their seed with the children of Ham.
in fact Joshua of NUN refused to preach to people in ethiopia. However Moses did take an ethiopian woman as a second wife.
and Solomon took the queen of sheba as a wife as well.
so just being an ethiopian was not the resriction.
Men of holiness are called to be separate from the carnal and the profane.Nowadays, it should be considered for christians to keep themselves OUT of places that are unclean, and stay away from people that Run in the streets with wickedness in the night. Staying away from Gangs also should be a practiced form of righteousness.
But as for RACE and religion, There are Black men who are more pious and holy than some of other races. There are More wicked men that are not black and these should be taught repentance but they should not be fellowshipped.
but if jesus were here today, he would be seen with many people who most christian, jews and muslims would Reject without any second thought.
it is a commandment by invitation to call people to repent so mankind can be received into the kingdom of God before God judges the world and casts out all the sons of perdition.

Yes, people have an absolute right to self-segregate. I work in an integrated environment and that's fine but its a fact that all of my closest friends are WASPs or Jews. Just worked out that way.

Here's what's fair: If you want to segregate yourself, don't complain about people excluding you. Make yourself separate, and you will be separate. Isn't that simple enough to understand? What the hell is tolerance anyways? Can't we do better than that? What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?

People are free do whatever they wish as long as they do not try to impose those beliefs on others.
The only problem with self-segregation is what happens when the person you don't want to live around moves in? If you attempt to intimidate, then you've just fallen down into the paths of treachery. Plus, it's illegal.
But, in essense, I think its perfectly fine to remove yourself from whatever arena doesn't fit your life.

It is certainly their RIGHT. The Amish, for instance do not want their members to become a part of our society in lifestyle and religion. That should be their right as well as you having the right to your own beliefs and lifestyle as long as it does not interfere with the rights of others. Have a great weekend!

I think self- segregation is fine as long as it excludes putting negative connotations and labels on those they are segregated from.

The freedom of association includes the freedom of disassociation. If people wish to be reclusive, so what. I say let people who want to be alone be as alone as they want to be. I have seen how the Hutterites, Menonites and a few others live. I got no problem with it.

I would worry about the children. People have a right to live life as they please, subject to acceptable moral behaviour, but I'm not so sure they that have the right to impose just anything on their children. You have to ask whether the children, all things considered, and being fully informed, would choose it for themselves.
